Our story
Founded in Brixton. Built for London.
The City Welfare started at a kitchen table in Brixton in 2020, and grew into a citywide operation supporting families across the capital.
Ruth grew up in Brixton. When the pandemic pushed her neighbours into food insecurity in the spring of 2020, she started cooking, packing and delivering food parcels herself. Word spread. Requests grew. The City Welfare became a way to meet that need with dignity and consistency.
Six years on, the mission is unchanged: no family in London should go without. What has changed is scale. We now work across 20 London boroughs with volunteers, ambassadors, corporate partners and public funders behind us.

We are a community interest company.
What is a CIC?
A community interest company is a UK company type created specifically for social enterprises. Profits and assets are locked to a community purpose, not distributed to shareholders.
Why it matters
The CIC asset lock means the money and resources we hold can only be used to serve the community we exist for. It gives funders and partners confidence in where every pound goes.
As we grow, The City Welfare is working towards registration as a charity, so we can widen our impact and open up new ways for supporters and funders to give.
